It’s the Greatest Little Wine Story Never Fully Told…Until Now

PHILADELPHIA–(BUSINESS WIRE)–June 26, 2014–

Rotella Productions announces that they are seeking funding for the development of a new movie, Judgment of Paris. How did a Cabernet Sauvignon from a three year old California winery, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, outclass centuries-old, world- renowned Bordeauxs? The Judgment of Paris, the seminal blind wine tasting event originally staged as a publicity stunt, during the 1976 American Bicentennial in Paris, shook the world of wine to its core. Only one journalist bothered to show-up-Time Magazine reporter George M. Taber who went on to write the award-winning book, “Judgment of Paris: California vs. France and the Historic 1976 Paris Tasting that Revolutionized Wine” (New York: Scribner, 2005.) The historical event is now to become a major motion picture, Judgment of Paris, the movie, by Rotella Productions.

Veteran Hollywood screenwriter, Robert Mark Kamen, The Karate Kid (series), Lethal Weapon 3, Taken I, II and III, (in production) and Taps and Naples, FL and businessman, Jonathan Rotella, are uniting their passionate love of wine and faith in the story that changed how the world would look at and embrace California wines. They believe it’s a story that reflects the true, entrepreneurial spirit and divine faith of the American Dream.

Based on Mr. Taber’s book and historical accounts, the screenplay follows the story of a wine store and wine school owner, Englishman Steven Spurrier, who staged the historic blind tasting and the California winemaker, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, who produced the award-winning, S.L.V. 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon.

“It’s really an American Dream Story,” Kamen said. “It’s a man who realizes his dreams. He does what he loves, makes wine, and he wants the world to know his wine is a winner.”

Kamen too, became fascinated with wine-making, after selling The Karate Kid script; he purchased 280 acres in Sonoma County and became a vintner. Rotella ordered a Kamen Cabernet one day, instantly falling in love with it. Countless cases later, the two met over the phone. But Rotella says their relationship really began decades earlier when he was a young boy, growing up in Philadelphia.

Rotella was being raised by his mother when The Karate Kid premiered. He identified with the movie’s main character-a boy also being raised by a single mother, facing life’s challenges.

“I really feel the stars have aligned,” Rotella said, “I’m working with someone who had an influence in my life at a very young age.” The Karate Kid is still one of Rotella’s favorite movies. (Click here for photo of Rotella and Kamen)

Rotella and Kamen say the impact of the Judgment of Paris should not be minimized. In 1976 the California wine industry grossed $300 million; last year that number was $23 billion.

Rotella and Kamen are in the process of raising the capital necessary to fund the film’s production.
