Congress left Washington this week as the national security community grappled with a new terror threat from Al Qaeda and the White House received news that Russia had granted temporary asylum to Edward Snowden. Sundayâs televisions talk shows examine the terror threat, Moscow-Washington relations, and lawmakersâ unfinished business on the economy, immigration and more.
To discuss the terror threat, ABCâs âThis Weekâ has Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; and Representatives C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland, the ranking Democrat on the House intelligence committee, and Peter T. King of New York, a Republican member of the same panel. Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, appears on CNNâs âState of the Union.â
Russiaâs decision this week to grant temporary asylum to Mr. Snowden, the fugitive former intelligence contractor, has put the National Security Agencyâs domestic surveillance programs back in the spotlight. Gen. Michael Hayden, a former director of the Central Intelligence Agency and the N.S.A., will discuss the controversy on âFox News Sunday,â appearing alongside Representative Justin Amash of Michigan, a Republican critic of the agency. NBCâs âMeet the Pressâ continues with Senators Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the assistant Democratic leader, and Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, the Republican vice-chairman of the Senate intelligence committee. Glenn Greenwald, the Guardian columnist who revealed N.S.A. documents given to him by Snowden, will discuss his reportage and Mr. Snowden on âThis Week.â
CBSâs âFace the Nationâ has Representatives Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin and Michael McCaul of Texas, both Republicans; and Senator Charles E. Schumer of New York, a Democrat.
On C-Spanâs âNewsmakers,â Senator Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont, the Democratic chairman of the Judiciary Committee, discusses the surveillance laws and issues involving the Voting Rights Act, the Patriot Act, immigration, guns, and American-Egyptian relations.
On immigration, Univisionâs âAl Punto,â has Representatives Robert W. Goodlatte of Virginia, the Republican chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary, and Luis V. Gutierrez of Illinois, a Democrat who is part of a bipartisan group of seven House members negotiating an immigration reform bill. Carlos Gutierrez, a former Commerce secretary, joins a round table discussion on immigration. And Anthony D. Weiner, the former Democratic congressman who resigned after a scandal over his lewd online behavior, discusses his mayoral bid.
Immigration is also the topic on Telemundoâs âEnfoque,â where Representative Raúl R. Labrador, Republican of Idaho, will sit down for an interview that the network describes as his âfirst face-to-face after breaking withâ the House immigration group.
âState of the Unionâ continues with Representative Steve Israel of New York, the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, on to discuss the economy and the 2014 elections.
The House Republican leader, Eric Cantor of Virginia, will talk about his pledge to stop government abuse in the Republican Weekly address on âFox News Sunday.â
âMeet the Pressâ will also have Rudy Giuliani, the Republican former mayor of New York City, discussing what the national security scuffle between two Republican presidential hopefuls, Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey and Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, means for their party.
Representative Dave Camp of Michigan, the Republican chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means, discussed tax reform, the economic proposals President Obama outlined this week, the federal budget, the economy and immigration on Bloombergâs âPolitical Capitalâ on Friday.
