Obama and Woods Meet for a Round of Golf

JUPITER, Fla. - President Obama and Tiger Woods will both live a dream on Sunday: playing golf together for the first time.

Waiting for Mr. Obama as he arrived for the second day of a three-day getaway at the exclusive Floridian Yacht and Golf Club in nearby Palm City, Fla., was Mr. Woods, formerly the top-ranked golfer in the world whose career was temporarily derailed after revelations in 2009 that he had had numerous extramarital affairs. His infidelities wrecked his marriage and caused him to leave the game for a time.

The president and Mr. Woods had met previously at the White House and indicated they would like to golf together.

“Historic day in golf â€" their first round,” Tim Rosaforte, a reporter for Golf Digest and Golf World, reported on his Twitter account from the resort.

Completing their foursome on a chilly and gusty Sunday, according to the deputy White Huse press secretary, Josh Earnest, were Ron Kirk, who will soon leave as Mr. Obama’s trade representative; and Jim Crane, an Obama contributor who owns the freight company E.G.L., the Houston Astros, and, significantly, the Floridian resort (and who also once topped Golf Digest’s ranking of golfers who are chief executive officers).

Mr. Obama had practiced for Sunday’s outing. According to reports from the resort on the Golf Digest Web site (White House reporters were kept out of sight, receiving only Mr. Earnest’s e-mails), the president played 27 holes on Saturday and also received lessons from two well-known golf coaches at the Floridian â€" Butch Harmon, who once taught Mr. Woods, and Claude Harmon III, Mr. Harmon’s son, who charges $1,500 an hour for a six-hour game evaluation, or $225 a player for group lessons.
