Apple today announced a new set of updates for its iTunes U education platform that should make it easier to use on the iPad.

One of the biggest additions in the update will be that teachers will be able to create an entire course using only the iPad, including being able to import documents and other content from iWork, iBooks Author, and a handful of education apps.

In addition to the teacher-focused tools, the update also includes features to help students create and participate in a discussion about the coursework.

These changes are likely very necessary to the overall health of iTunes U, as teachers don’t want to have to juggle multiple devices to make coursework. Just today, an L.A. school district announced that it would be shifting away from providing free iPads to students and teachers in favor of hybrid laptop/tablet devices from Google and Microsoft.

Apple said the iTunes U update should roll out to everyone July 8.
